Why the Donbas encirclement will fail

The Austrian Bundesheer (armed forces) released a detailed analysis of the current military situation in Donbas. This article relies primarily on the information found therein.

The current state of the war in Donbas is similar to the trench warfare of the First World War. Military experts assume that the Russian army won't manage to encircle Donbas. But why?

1. The Balance of Power

The Ukrainian army acts primarily from out of the trenches. The Russian military has tried to clear these with artillery bombardments. The Ukrainian soldiers simply wait for these attacks and return to their trenches to ride them out - "mobile defense". The Ukrainian army has built themselves at least three defensive rings, each equipped with trenches. This is decisive in this phase of the war.

To stage an attack on one of these defensive positions, military leadership assumes that the attacking side will need roughly four times the numbers of soldiers and equipment as the defending side. Currently, there are 48 Ukrainian and 68 Russian batallions in the area around Donbas. These 68 Russian batallions lack the strength to overtake these positions. Russia would actually need 192 batallions to achieve success in this kind of trench warfare. Therefore, it stands that the Ukrainians are currently militarily superior.

2. Time

The Russian army has publicly announced the withdrawal of its forces from around Kyiv in order to concentrate them in the east. With this information, Ukraine had the opporunity to prepare itself for this attack on the eastern front. This meant that a suprise attack would no longer be possible which only strengthens the defending side. The Ukrainian army then could fortify their defensive lines which they've been building out since 2014. Additionally, weapons shipments from "the West" have had plenty of time to reach the front.

3. The Terrain

The terrain around Donbas is not without its obstacles. Forests and rivers make it challenging for the Russians to attack anywhere. Additionally, throughout the war it has become clear again and again that the Russian command has proven to be less familiar with the terrain than was initially assumed.

4. Anti-Tank Weapons

The Ukrainian army lacks a lot of the heavy equipment required to withstand direct attacks. But after the artillery fire, the Russian army makes use of tanks and infantry to capture positions. It is at this point that the Ukrainian army is able to compensate for their lack of armor and heavy weapons as they can make effective use of anti-tank weapons. The majority of these, such as Javelin launchers, have been supplied by "the West" and are amongst the most modern anti-tank rockets in the world. They can be fired at great distance and still hit their targets and, until now, have been one of the main technical advantages and reasons as to why Russia hasn't been able to assert its armor superiority.

5. Information

Russia has air superiority in Donbas. That is intrinsically a decided advantage. Despite this, the Ukrainian army has consistently managed to shoot down Russian drones, which are especially important as they can reveal enemy artillery positions. It seems, then, that this has rendered the Russian air superiority to be of no particular advantage.

Conclusion

Ultimately, all of the evidence here points to the encirclement of Donbas failing unless Russia were to utilize weapons of mass destruction or institute a general mobilization of its forces. As it stands, with its current forces, Russia will fail to encircle Donbas.

In World War Two there was an attempt at encirclement in this very same region as the German Wehrmacht attempted to surround the Red Army. It failed for the exact same reason that the Russian army will fail today: not enough soldiers, not enough equipment, and not enough understanding of the challenging terrain in Donbas.
