Ukrainians are Googling "How to shoot down a drone from home?"

The Russo-Ukrainian war has put on display a variety of new and advanced military technologies from around the world. And throughout the course of the last eight months of full-scale war, the words "for the first time in history" have been uttered on numerous occasions.

For the first time in history, farmers are stealing tanks, for the first time in history, social networks are being used so widely for information warfare or disinformation. For the first time in history, the Ukrainian military has shot down cruise missiles with a hand-held missile system - which was not designed to shoot down missiles at all, and had only previously seen use against helicopters and airplanes.

In the last few days, however, it wasn’t the military who had accomplished something for the first time related to the war effort. Instead, in Kyiv, the police - who usually patrol the streets and catch petty criminals - shot down an Iranian Shahid drone sent by Russian on a bombing run to the Ukrainian capital.

Policemen in Kyiv, armed with 7.62 and 5.45 mm Kalashnikov assault rifles, opened fire on the drone as soon as they saw the object flying through the sky above Kyiv.

For days, Russia has been using the drones to attack the infrastructure of Ukraine. They’ve been referred to as "mopeds" because of the distinctive sound produced by their gasoline engine. They measure 3x3 meters, and travel at speeds from 100 to 180 kilometers per hour.

Patrol policemen, a local defense fighter, a criminal investigation officer, and a special operations fighter shot down the drone as it approached its target using machine guns and pistols.

One of the patrolmen said that at first the policemen heard the drone as it was flying overhead. The patrolman acted as part of the team. They looked at the direction it was flying from and deduced its intended target. As the drone flew a little further, in the direction of Kudryashova Street, they opened fire. It changed its trajectory before it fell 50 meters from the police patrol.

Despite the ongoing conflict and the position of the police as a state protectionary force, there are no specific manuals or instructions in police materials which outline scenarios involving using service weapons against a flying target.

The patrol assumed the risk of the situation and acted to prevent the drone from reaching its target, and in doing so, has created a case which they can point to to argue for the inclusion of guidelines regarding the use of service weapons against flying targets.

The case has also elicited response from high-ranking police and government officials. Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, immediately called on the civilian population of cities to open fire on drones with hunting rifles, should they have them at home and spot a hostile drone.

While drone hunting season might seem to be open now, the Minister of Internal Affairs Mr. Monastyrskyi said that it is better only for citizens who have special training to take the initiative to open fire should they see a drone.

The event also stirred a considerable rise in public interest amongst Ukrainians, with the Google Trends data showing 35,100 searches for "how to shoot down a drone from home" in the days following the incident.

All things considered, with the drones being relatively simple pieces of military equipment running on noisy low-speed gasoline engines, it seems fitting to Ukrainians that they should be countered with equally simple methods: a few sharp-shooting police armed with Kalashnikovs and pistols.

Російсько-українську війну 2022 року називають війною нових та передових технологій. Також у цій війні часто звучить словосполучення «вперше в історії». Наприклад, вперше в історії українські фермери крадуть російські танки, вперше в історії так широко використовуються соцмережі для інформаційної війни або дезинформації, або ж – вперше в історії, українські військові збивають крилаті ракети за допомогою ручного ракетного комплексу – який зовсім не призначений для збивання ракет, і раніше використовувався лише проти гелікоптерів і літаків.

 Не відстає від військових, що збивають ракети, і Національна поліція. В Києві поліцейські, які зазвичай патрулюють вулиці і виловлюють дрібних правопорушників, змогли збити дрон-камікадзе Shahed, який Росія закупила в Ірану, за допомогою своєї професійної зброї.

Такі дрони називають «мопеди» через характерний звук, який видає бензиновий двигун дрона. Його розмір 3х3 метри, швидкість – від 100 до 180 кілометрів на годину.

 Поліцейські в Києві озброєні автоматами Калашникова калібром 7.62 і 5.45 мм – саме з них вони відкрили вогонь по дрону, як тільки побачили ворожий літаючий об’єкт у небі над українською столицею. 

 Один з патрульних розповів, що спершу поліцейські почули, що летить дрон. Вони діяли у складі екіпажу. Одна із співробітниць побачила звідки летить дрон, вони визначили ціль, дрон летів у направлені вулиці Кудряшова. Патрульні відкрили вогонь, дрон змінив траєкторію та впав приблизно в 50 метрах від поліцейських.

 В інструкції для поліції немає вказівок по застосуванню табельної зброї по летючим цілям. Отже, поліцейські діяли на свій страх і ризик, проявили ініціативу і створили цілий казус, після якого можливо відредагують інструкцію із застосування зброї, додавши до неї таку ціль, як дрон.

 Стрільба по летючим об’єктам викликала полеміку серед поліцейських вищих чинів. Антон Геращенко, радник міністра внутрішніх справ України, одразу закликав цивільне населення міст відкривати вогонь по дронам з мисливської зброї, якщо хтось має її вдома.

 Це могло б відкрити цілий сезон полювання на дронів, але міністр внутрішніх справ пан Монастирський заявив, що відкривати вогонь краще громадянам, які мають спеціальну підготовку.

Не дивлячись на те, величезна кількість запитів (35 100) з’явились у Гугл від українців на тему: «Як збити дрон камікадзе у домашніх умовах».
