Controversies continued all summer about the need to resume offline learning in schools and the risks associated with it. At Buchansk Lyceum No. 9, almost 60% of parents expressed a desire for their children to study offline.

In Ukraine, the first of September is celebrated nationwide as a holiday, with the festivities centered around the beginning of school for the year. However, this year, the day passed without as much of the excitement the day would have elicited under normal circumstances.

The children gathered in their classes, where their teachers spent their educational hours with them and congratulated them on the beginning of the new school year. Despite the absence of an official holiday to mark the occasion, as would usually be the case, children and their teachers still made the most of the holiday unofficially. Children came to school in festive clothes, in embroidered dresses, with bows, with flowers, and with balls in their hands.

The mother of a third-grader, who wished to remain anonymous, said that she had advocated for offline learning, even though it was a scary premise. "It's good that my child has the opportunity to attend school even during the war, but I'm a little worried, of course" – says the woman.

But it is no longer possible to continue online education, which has been going on intermittently since the spring of 2020. Especially considering that in the fall of 2019, her daughter entered the first grade and did not attend full-time school most of the time.

The children themselves seem to be more excited about spending time with their peers than they are about their own safety. "I am very glad that I returned to school," says fifth-grader Andrii. – Glad to see my friends. Not all of them, though. My best friend stayed with his parents abroad."

Although the children spent the day laughing, enjoying seeing their friends again, and showing off their new backpacks, they also displayed small insights into how the war has affected them. On the playground, the kids could be seen playing “air alert”: whoever doesn’t manage to hide fast enough, they say, was killed by a rocket. At the same time, going into the air raid shelters provided by the school in the event of real air raid sirens only upsets them.

The shelter is located in the basement of the school and has several entrances - from the street and from inside the school. From the outside it looks like a school under a school — with a corridor, children's lockers, classrooms and even a gym. That is, when the sirens sound, rather than simply going to the basement to hide, the children are divided into their classes and the school day and their lessons continue.

The shelter has internet, multimedia boards, desks, chairs, benches, as well as blankets, sleeping bags, and mats, so that children can lie down if necessary. Also, compost toilets are set to be delivered this week specifically for the basement shelter. Moreover, by order of Bucha’s mayor, the shelters must be aesthetically designed, so that the children feel more comfortable and safer there in moral and psychological terms.

Primary school teacher Taisia Vasylivna says: "The military is fighting in the war, we are fighting here. The school is our front, but the front is positive and we must continue full-time (offline) education. This is my calling and I have to do what I can. I really missed these children all this time. To be honest, even when I was going to school in the morning, I didn't think about the war or air raids, I only thought about what to wear for the holiday."

Taisia is not afraid to work in wartime, she says she has no right to say that she is afraid, because she is an example fo her class children and their parents. Out of 35 children in her class, 23 made it today for offline learning — most parents trust the teachers and consider the school’s preparations to be reliable enough. The teacher herself, too, because her daughter attends the same school.

Buchan Lyceum is 95% equipped with teachers. Many teachers left the territorial community or the country. Some continue to work online since, after all, 23% of the students of this school will spend the new school year just like that, and other teachers were replaced by immigrants from the temporarily occupied territories.

Eleventh-grader Alina went to Poland with her mother and grandmother at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but persuaded them to return home and continue their studies before the beginning of the school year. The girl wants to finish her schooling in an already free Ukraine: "I am very sorry for this year's graduates who finished school online, did not wear prom dresses and did not dance a farewell waltz. I think this is an important event in life."
