At the beginning of September, over the course of 6 days, the Armed Forces of Ukraine freed 421 settlements in the Kharkiv region from occupation by Russian troops. This part of the northeast was controlled by the Russians from the beginning of the war. According to the American Institute for the Study of War, the Ukrainian army de-occupied more territory in 6 days than the Russians had been able to capture since April. And it was a successful counter-operation by the Ukrainian defense forces, added Ben Godges, the former commander of the US Army in Europe. After Russia's defeat in the Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian military spoke of a turning point in the war in favor of Ukraine and the subsequent loss of Russian control over the occupied east and south. The head of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, Serhii Kuzan, told Katapult Ukraine that the preparation for the counterattack on Kharkiv Oblast began with the information component. The Armed Forces were able to outwit the enemy by simulating an attack in the south, in the direction of Kherson Oblast. Because of this, the Russians withdrew part of the military forces and equipment from the Kharkiv region to the south. In addition, the human factor worked in favor of Ukraine, says Kuzan. The Russians did not believe in the possibility of a large-scale offensive by the Ukrainian army and were too confident in their numerical and military superiority. "To some extent, they were right, because we really did not have a numerical advantage over the enemy, which is necessary for an offensive, such as 1:3. In addition, we did not have time to obtain a sufficient amount of Western offensive weapons. The Russians knew about this, so they did not expect that the Armed Forces would go on the offensive from all sides. Due to such self-confidence, they lacked proper defensive positions," Kuzan said. The beginning of the Ukrainian army's counteroffensive was a real surprise for the Russians and caused panic, says Kuzan. Added to this was the lack of communication between Russian units. They did not understand what was happening in their own or in other positions even a kilometer or two away, and eventually began to run away as best they could. "They threw away expensive military equipment, because you can't escape far on a tank, unlike a car or even a bicycle," Kuzan added. In fact, before the start of the counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region, even the Ukrainian military did not even think that this operation would be so quick and successful. Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov also spoke about this in an interview with the Financial Times. According to him, the offensive of the Ukrainian military in the east went much better than expected. This is also confirmed to KATAPULT Ukraine by a fighter of one of the Ukrainian brigades deployed in the Kharkiv Region, callsign Blyskavka. In the previous 5 months of the war, the main task before the command was to drive the Russians away from the city of Kharkiv and its surroundings with any available forces. They had been preparing for a counteroffensive for more than a month. The preparation was carried out under the label "top secret", because a powerful Russian spy network continues to operate in Ukraine. Blyskavka noted the work of Ukrainian military intelligence. She exposed the Russians' plans for regrouping and advised the Armed Forces to advance from the most unpredictable directions against the Russians. For example, they chose rivers and ravines as starting points for their assaults. "To capture the city of Kupyansk, for example, the Ukrainian military entered the positions of the Russians from the side of the Oskil River. It was very unexpected for them. We were able to create a cauldron effect for the Russians - a principle they often use themselves. This caused them incredible panic, which caused them to flee from the occupied territory," Blyskavka said. Combat assault brigades and special forces with combat experience operated in the most difficult areas of the counteroffensive. They were well-coordinated, well-trained, and well-equipped. Their units were strengthened by territorial defense forces, which consists of 90% natives of the Kharkiv region. This means that they are well-oriented in the area. "Since 2019, a reorganization has begun in the Armed Forces, according to which sergeants and company commanders received more authority and the right to make decisions independently, based on the situation. This change showed its success on the battlefield, including in the Kharkiv region. This was our advantage, because in the Russian army, the main decisions come from people who are not on the battlefield," says Blyskavka. Serhii Kuzan adds that while fleeing Kharkiv Oblast, the Russians promised the locals to return in 2 months. Therefore, people are still scared and have only one question: "How long will Ukraine hold the area?" "For a long time. Currently, the Russians do not have the opportunity to recapture the liberated territory. Behind us is a strong defense - the river Oskil." Kuzan assures. "The Armed Forces had the potential to reach the borders of the Luhansk region, but they decided to gain a foothold and build defenses in the liberated territories. A turning point in the war has taken place, the initiative belongs to the Ukrainian army. The main thing is that the West continues to supply all the necessary weapons so that Ukraine can see the matter through." On September 22, in his evening address, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, assured that the Ukrainian army is currently preparing for a series of further victories at the front. In an interview with the German newspaper BILD on Wednesday, September 21, Zelenskyy added that the mobilization in Russia will not change any of Ukraine's plans to de-occupy the captured territories.
