Attack on Odesa on May 2nd

A missile launched from Crimea hit a two-story hostel in Odesa on May 2nd. A 14-year-old boy died on the spot from his injuries. A 17-year-old girl with multiple wounds was hospitalized. She is in the intensive care unit. The girl’s condition remains serious.

Neighbors describe the victim as a good-hearted kid who liked to study and help others. She had plans to get married on May 5th after turning 18.

The hostel is located near a military base in an area that was bombed by Russian missiles a few times in the past few days. Some of the tenants left the building before yesterday’s attack. Others were living in a basement. 

KATAPULT Ukraine correspondent Nina Lyashonok, who was at the scene said: “They hit the center of the building. The people were crying and rushing out with their backpacks and suitcases. They took their cats and dogs with them. Soldiers were guarding the area.”

A nearby church has also been damaged as a result of the attack. Windows have been shattered and the roof almost destroyed.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the following in response: “A 14-year-old boy was killed.A 17-year-old was wounded. She has shrapnel wounds. What is this? What for? What kind of threat do these kids and the hostel pose to the Russian Federation?”

Earlier, it was reported that the victim was 15 years old. The rescuers and volunteers are clearing the rubble. 
According to local authorities, the probability of another missile attack is extremely high.

UKRAINIAN: Атака на Одесу 2-го травня

2 травня ракета, запущена з Криму, влучила у двоповерховий хостел в Одесі. Від отриманих травм 14-річний хлопець помер на місці. 17-річну дівчину з численними пораненнями госпіталізували. Вона перебуває у відділенні інтенсивної терапії. Стан дівчини залишається важким.

Сусіди розповідають, що дівчина була добросердною, любила вчитися та допомагати іншим. Вона планувала вийти заміж 5 травня, коли їй виповниться 18 років.

Хостел розташований поблизу військової бази в районі, який за останні кілька днів кілька разів бомбили російські ракети. Частина орендарів покинула будівлю ще до вчорашнього нападу. Інші жили у сховищах.

Кореспондент KATAPULT Ukraine Ніна Ляшонок, яка була на місці події, розповіла: «Вони потрапили в центр будівлі. Люди плакали й вибігали з рюкзаками та валізами. Вони взяли з собою своїх котів і собак. Військові охороняли територію».

Внаслідок нападу також пошкоджено сусідню церкву. Вікна вибиті, дах майже знищено.

Президент Володимир Зеленський прокоментував атаку: “Вбили хлопчика 14 років. Поранили дівчину 17 років, у неї – осколкове поранення. Що це взагалі? Для чого? Чим російській державі загрожували ці діти і гуртожиток?”.

Рятувальники та волонтери розчищають завали. А за словами місцевої влади, вірогідність чергового ракетного обстрілу надзвичайно висока.
